Schedule:

Day Morning Evening
1
  • Introduction to workshop brief
  • Specifying the goals, objectives, schedule and deliverables
  • Opening lecture outlining the domain of Interaction Design and Physical Computing
  • Group formation

- Introduction to Processing - Tutor + Student groups get together for informal discussion on Interaction Design

2

- Technical tutorials + Hands on assignment: Basics of Processing - Technical tutorials + Hands on assignment: Advanced Processing techniques

- Design discussion: Methodology >> Discussion and Assignment: Diagraming generic workflows, of two to three artists/architects, involved in the domain of interactive art and architecture. This involves studying the design development process including tracing what stages involved which technological tools as well as tracing the development of the concept into a reality. What were the most important physical and sociological considerations during this development phase and ultimately understanding what went into manufacturing the interaction piece per se.

3

- Technical tutorial + Hands on assignment: Basics of Arduino - Technical tutorial + Hands on assignment: Advanced Arduino

- Design discussion: Review and discussion of Methodology assignment and advise on developing a digital reference library

4

- Technical tutorial + Hands on assignment: Basics of Firefly - Design discussion: Reviewing the digital references and suggesting new ones

- Design discussion: Group vision and Interaction design direction based on the reference library per group. - Sharpening the concept collaboratively and discussing adherence to the goal of the workshop. - Assignment: Narrowing down vision to come up with concrete design solution.

5

- Fabrication time: Physical computing experiment 01 involving basic electronic circuits, arduino boards and one sensor + one actuator.

- Fabrication time: Physical computing experiment 01 involving basic electronic circuits, arduino boards and one sensor and one actuator. - Design discussion: Further narrowing down visions and introduction of story boarding + scenario building assignment.

6

- Design discussion: Reviewing story boards and finalizing the prototype sample + interaction routine - Setting out requirements for full prototype and associated physical computing experiments

- Fabrication time: Experiment 2.0 with complexity building up in terms of electronic components + laser cutting - Group discussion: Progress and charting out the plan for the coming days

7

- Fabrication time: Final prototype development

- Fabrication time: Final prototype development

8

- Design discussion: Review of technical development and problem solving

- Design discussion: Reviewing the prototype development + instructions for setting up presentation and testing

9

- Fabrication time: Final prototype + user testing + presentation development (distributed group tasks)

- Fabrication time: Fabrication time: Final prototype + user testing + presentation development (distributed group tasks)

10

- Refinement time: Final refinement of technical and presentation aspects in discussion with the tutors

- Final presentation: With invited external guests. Feedback to each group provided after the presentation + interaction with each group’s prototypes - Conclusion: Informal session with drinks and snacks for one to one feedback to the groups and having lighter debates.
